Side by Side is a video series on local multiplayer games. This is episode 16 of 17.
This week Joel Goodwin of Electron Dance and Gregg Burnell of Tap-Repeatedly try to make every shot count in the amazing Shot Shot Shoot by Erik Svedang. With an aesthetic that’s much closer to the Atari 2600 than the NES style that passes for “retro”, Shot Shot Shoot challenges players to fire a barrage of missiles at their opponent to level all their bases. It’s like a two-player missile command and it’s bloody good.

This looks pretty fun, but… what is it played with? It looks as if you guys may be playing it sharing a keyboard?
I don’t remember receiving this alongside Sportsfriends but I rather stupidly asked for my copy for the PS3, which never gets turned on, because I was hoping to one day own enough PS Move wands for JS Joust.
Yes it was sharing keyboard. It’s a shame you can’t play this version unless you backed Sportsfriends. It might have depended on what level you backed at – don’t recall. But golly there were a lot of Sportsfriends rewards! The rewards were one of the motivators to do these videos and, ironically, their Achilles’ heel.
I am disappoint. I could get a lot more people to play this if controller support were present. And, indeed, if it were available!
Well, if my experiments in game dev world go well, I can always just rip off their idea and release a clone. I would call it… Shoot Shoot Shot.
Now you mention it, I only just realised it’s a kind of hideous game title. I really hate it now!
It is a pretty horrible game title yeah. When I played it in LA with Armand, he was a bit taken aback by the lack of controller support. He didn’t take to the game well either, but I still love the friction between all the things at play: managing your ammo, the number of projectiles determining the speed of them, trying to dodge or intercept enemy shots and setting up trajectories.
Gregg, SPOILER: in season two, we review games people can actually play.
