Side by Side is a video series on local multiplayer games. This is final episode of the seventh series.

Joel Goodwin of Electron Dance and Gregg Burnell of Tap-Repeatedly are, once again, at each other’s throats in the polished-to-perfection 1v1 deathmatch title Rounds, where getting killed just means getting upgrades and then getting even. While Joel is confused that someone has attached the term ‘roguelite’ to the game’s description, it doesn’t slow down Gregg’s circular saw because he just keeps coming. The seventh series finishes in an exciting explosion of squeals and giggles.

  1. But I never found out why it’s a roguelite!

It’s because of the upgrades, right?

  2. Yeah, I think it’s just the upgrades between the rounds which is… a whack justification for invoking the roguelike label. No wonder Gregg and I dismissed it for a previous series.

  3. I enjoyed the ‘Candy Crush is a roguelike’ dramatic reenactment a lot 😀

(Also the subtle irony of someone else driving by to bemoan their own nomenclature woes in a separate genre – which you immediately offhandedly quibbled – showing how we are all both Caesar and Brutus in our own and other people’s linguistic tragedies. Hell is other people, to mix dramatic metaphors.)
