The car is bouncing down this long, narrow, rut-riddled country lane. Our holiday cottage is near the end of it; there are few reasons for anyone to wander down it’s length. There’s only a farm and a couple of cottages on it. And, more importantly, it’s a dead end. It doesn’t go anywhere.

So it is with some surprise that we meet an Ocado shopping van coming from the opposite direction.

At this point, I casually mention to Mrs. HM that I am reminded of those sandbox games like GTA, that spawn endless vehicles emerging from a cul-de-sac because, from where you’re standing, it looks just like a small slice of very long, well-connected road. Remember the conundrum “if a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound”? Sandbox law states that the tree won’t even fall unless you’re there for the event to trigger. In fact, the road believes it exists unto infinity until you disprove it with observation. The sandbox universe needs you to breathe and itch; without you it dies.

It’s at this point I realise I need a holiday from games. Ladies and gentlemen, turn off your computers.
