@beam: I cannot help you with your query regarding dan's dating situation. Maybe his facebook page will help out.

@gregg: I'd be interested in hearing what you think about dear esther. Its probably the gaming equivalent of the notorious belbin test.

@shaun: its my mantra every time I put up a post. I'm a pessimist deep down.

Excellent stuff Joel. Glad to see your interviewees are getting really stuck into these questions. I like how Dan Pinchbeck so cheerfully adheres to Sam Beckett's aphorism, "fail better"!

Another terrific interview. It sounds like these academic devs are in really good places; analyzing and pushing the medium, inspiring others and paying the bills, all at once.

I installed Dear Esther over the weekend with a view to playing it this week at some point, I look forward to it. Who knows, I might even pluck the courage up to play Amnesia one day and then move on to A Machine for Pigs... but I'm a scaredy cat.

What a smart, well-spoken man. Single?

The link between thechineseroom and the University of Portsmouth is almost a study in and of itself. I'm glad the university is so open to all the directions Dan takes the studio in. I hope future successes encourage other universities to follow suit.

The Unlimited Hyperbole podcast sounds a lot like something I'd like to hear. Thanks, HM!

@Richard, thanks! One of my key questions for the series about how academic developers could sell games if their games were entwined with university research - and thus university funding. Really pleased that Dan went to town on this question.

@Alex, thanks! I think the rest of the interviews are similarly illuminating but for all sorts of different reasons. Great comment about the trajectory of Dan's research. I wonder if Dan will actually make a bona fide FPS one of these years...!

You've accumulated some great interviews in this series.

I admire Dan Pinchbeck because he's not just some guy that made a game with no shooting in it. He's a guy that played like every shooter. Then wrote a 300-page thesis on shooters. Then made a game with no shooting in it.
